Crossley Gallery invites you to Exist & Expire, a collection of work that reflects on what once existed and what now appears in an altered, silent, and ambiguous state. Featuring works by Ringling College of Art and Design seniors José Linares and Athena Nugent, Exist & Expire engages with the gallery space with its presentation of oil & acrylic paintings as well as furniture-based sculptures.

Linares exhibits sculptures and oil paintings that explore our relationships involving detachment, isolation, and the uncanny. Coming from how we interact with our environment, these artworks combine images of architecture and real furniture to explore the psychology behind our everyday settings. Linares builds analogies to demonstrate an uncanny detachment between our environment and one another through our shared understandings of furniture and domestic spaces.

Nugent fully renders animals and elements of nature in their natural colors, giving them a true-to-life appearance. When painting dual animals, the emphasis shifts to their present or past dependent relationship. By examining these animals, through texture, color and stance, they take on a power and presence that they still or once exhibited.
